Carolyn WEEMS for Virginia Beach School Board: District 9

We Know Carolyn

Carolyn was born and raised in Tennessee before attending Clemson University. While in college, she was a varsity tennis player, a student senator, a resident assistant, member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and worked part time cleaning bathrooms in her dormitory. She is grateful that her parents instilled in her the importance of education, character, work ethic and community involvement. Soon after graduation, she married her college sweetheart, Billy, and they moved to Norfolk where they both began teaching and coaching at Old Dominion University. Carolyn enjoyed 6 years there as the Women’s Tennis Coach. A few years later, they moved to Virginia Beach so their children could attend Virginia Beach Public Schools and they have lived in District 9 for 34 years. After a storm

destroyed their business, they started a small advertising specialty company. Billy and Carolyn have managed this business for approximately 3 decades. They were blessed to have 5 children who are all very different and definitely had different pathways to adulthood. Carolyn quickly became very involved with their schools and extracurricular activities and she and Billy would often "divide and conquer” while juggling work, baseball, dance, volleyball, church activities, homework etc. Carolyn is a teacher, Church Youth Director, a member of the School Board and President of Caitlyn’s HALO, her non-profit she began in honor of her daughter, Caitlyn, after she died of an opioid overdose.

I humbly ask for your support on November 8

BECAUSE KIDS MATTER CAROLYN WILL:

Increase Career and Technical Education opportunities

Carolyn supports the creation of a full time trade school and the offering of paid internships through partnering with local businesses.

Preserve land currently owned by the School Board in the Aragona neighborhood

The current Bayside 6th grade campus will be moving and the School Board will declare the land to be surplus property.  The Aragona community has expressed the need for a neighborhood park.  Several years ago, there were efforts behind the scenes to create apartments on this land.  Carolyn helped stop that proposal because the community had not been notified or given input.  She supports the desires of the community for open space for a park.

Open a Recovery School for students facing the challenges of substance abuse disorders

A recovery school will help students with addiction be able to get both treatment and an education.  Currently, there is nothing available like this in our area and parents must travel to other areas for these services.  Carolyn has been recognized nationally for her advocacy to help treat addiction and wants to continue to help save lives here in Virginia Beach

Strengthen the inclusion model and transition services for Special Education

Virginia Beach has improved the special education program over the last few years thanks to the advocacy of Mrs Weems and the parents and community members of the SEAC (Special Education Advisory Committee).  However, more work needs to be done to provide more opportunities for students to participate in clubs and extra-curriculars.  Also, improving the transition from high school into the work-force or college for students with special needs.

Insist on academic excellence and student accountability

Carolyn supports the return of recognition of Valedictorian and Salutatorian.  Also, students must learn accountability through turning in work on time.  The change in grading practices has caused much more work for teachers and diminished student accountability.

ONGOING PRIORITIES

  • Parental rights and input must be at the forefront of all policy decisions made by the school board
  • Obscene and sexually explicit materials should not be provided to minor children without parental permission
  • Teachers must be given support for student discipline problems and working conditions must be improved
